After his time as a maître de chai at an estate in Bordeaux, Mathias Lopez imagined a different kind of career in wine growing - one more strongly linked to the cultural and historical heritage of his more humble home region and its traditional minimal viticulture. He returned to his native Roussillon where he took over 2.6 ha of vines around the villages of Maury and Corneilla-la-Riviere in 2022. The first vintage he made in his parents garage without any additives and only the bare minimum equipment. In 2023, Mathias got rid of some parcels that were overly-productive and chose to pick up new, better situated sites in Paziols located in the Corbières AOC. The 2023 vintage is composed of grapes from both Roussillon and Corbières. 2024 marked a further shift in Mathias’s project, with a complete turn towards Paziols, where he acquired new plots and built a house which will soon be the site of his new chai. Until then, his wines are vinified chez Domaine de Mena (where Mathias once worked in the cellars) without fining, filtration, or sulfur addition in order to best showcase the extreme attention he puts into the vineyard work to truly reflect the dramatic terroir of his surroundings.
